Gospel Reflection - Cycle A - Pentecost

My weekly reflection on the Sunday Gospel reading. In this video, I reflect on John 20:19-23, the Gospel reading for Pentecost in Cycle A, as well as Acts 2:1-11, exploring the following topics:

- Pentecost is the birthday of the Church.
- The Gospel reading takes place on Easter Sunday. Jesus is preparing the disciples for the full outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
- Jesus breathing on the disciples symbolizes the remaking of creation.
- The eternal peace of Christ will permeate the remade creation.
- Christ gives authority to the Church.
- The Israelite celebration of Pentecost involved the presentation of the first fruits. At Pentecost, the new converts are the first fruits of the mission to evangelize the world.
- The miracle of the languages at Pentecost is the reversal of the story of Babel.
- The Holy Spirit vivifies the Church.
- The Holy Spirit keeps the Church from falling into error.
- The Holy Spirit empowers each of us to follow Christ.
- Reconnecting with the gifts of the Holy Spirit this Pentecost.
- The Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of the Church. She helps us to say yes to the Holy Spirit, as she did.
